Operation Halyard in 1944 was the largest rescue operation of American and Allied air force in history. More than 500 US pilots were rescued, along with those from other countries, almost in front of the Germans, with most of the actions carried out in the light of the day.

Thousands of brave Serb men and women risked their lives to save and protect our soldiers. They are the true heroes of this operation. They treated the wounded pilots and shared the last crumb of their already modest food to keep our flyers alive. They risked everything - the lives of their families and their villages - because of the higher goal we shared. For this, America will always be grateful. With their hands, the Americans and the Serbs worked side by side to build a runway capable of sustaining landing of the planes that would take these pilots to a safe territory. They were assisted by several US operatives who came to the territory of Serbia by means of a parachute, to organize this operation. The conceptual leader of this brave rescue plan was George Vujnovic, and the operation in Pranjani was led by George Musulin, and then by Nik Lalic - sons of Serbian immigrants to the United States, who returned to support the country of their ancestors.

Recalling these events, we also call to mind the strong friendly relationships that bound our countries through history. During the two world wars, Americans and Serbs fought for freedom, side by side. I feel humble when I think of the sacrifice, heroism and determination of the Serbs in the name of friendship between our two peoples.
